Hilltop Fruit Market – Home of Candyland!

If you’re ever traveling the roads of extreme Western Maryland (I’m talking west of Frostburg now – where I think it can snow in June) you may have seen a billboard for Hilltop Fruit Market in Grantsville.  If you’ve got kids (or are a kid at heart), the next time you’re out that way you need to take some time to visit – if for only one thing……

Candyland!

Sure, Hilltop has great produce, fruits, nuts, and all kinds of kitchen goodies, but the one thing that you’ll remember after just one visit is Candyland.   Do you recall the days of “penny” candy?  Filling up your pockets with all kinds of sweet treats for only a quarter?  Well, this will bring back some memories, and your kids will wonder why you never took them to Hilltop Fruit Market before! (Who am I kidding?  The Four State Food Critic loves this place as well!)

Eyes will light up at the sight of BB Bats, licorice whips, wax bottles full of disgustingly sweet colored liquids, Sugar Daddies, Tootsie Rolls, individual flavors of Starburst, and so much more.  You can almost picture Gene Wilder dancing in the aisles in his “Willie Wonka” costume singing “Pure Imagination”.

Do you just like banana-flavored “Runts”?  They’ve got them – already pre-bagged.  Like chocolate?  Get a cart and start tossing it in.  There are rows and rows of this stuff – even a section of nothing but sugar free candy as well.  If you can remember it, they’ve probably got it.  Just grab a bag and start filling it up.  At Hilltop Fruit Market, you buy candy by the pound, and believe me when I tell you that you’ll have several when you head to the checkout line.

It may seem like a bit of a drive to get there, but the sugar rush you’ll experience on the trip home will make the time pass by in a heartbeat and you’ll soon be making an excuse to plan a return visit.
