The Four State Food Critic had the chance to have dinner
with an old friend and his family this week, so we met on his turf east of
Hagerstown at The Main Cup in
Middletown, Md.

The Main Cup started out slowly as a coffee shop back in
2007. It is located in the building that
was once home to Main’s Ice Cream and Butcher Shop right along the main street
of historic Middletown (on Alt 40). Over
the years, The Main Cup has expanded into a bar & grill (as well as
continuing with its coffee roots), and has turned into a place where locals can
hang out and enjoy a drink or families can gather for a nice meal. The interior is broken up into several dining
spaces and a large bar area. Local art
lines brick covered walls, and couch seating is scattered throughout. The rooms buzz with conversation as plates of
food and drink are whisked in an out by the efficient wait staff.
The FSFC started out with a Widmer Hefeweizen from the bar,
but there were several local brews on tap.
The menu at The Main Cup is loaded with attractive appetizers, salads,
sandwiches, and entrees. My friend has
eaten here many times and states that everything he’s ever sampled has been
well prepared and fresh. I then glanced
over at the “specials” board and saw they were offering a Chilean Sea Bass with
a sundried-tomato risotto and grilled asparagus. Choice made.
As a matter of fact, all three adults in our party made this selection
and were not disappointed.
The bass was one of the best pieces of fish the FSFC has
tasted in a long time. Moist and
delicious, it went well with the creamy risotto. The asparagus were also grilled perfectly,
still retaining that nice al dente crunch while bursting with grilled
flavor. Kudos to the chef and his line
cooks.
Following the meal we had coffees and shared a toffee bread
pudding, which was also tasty. Service
was provided by an excellent waitress, who was attentive, speedy, and very pleasant. The vibe in the dining room encourages
conversation, and we never felt rushed to leave in order to open the table for
new guests. I’ll attribute that to the
restaurant’s coffee shop roots.
The Main Cup also has a full bar and offers live music on
the weekends.
Middletown should consider itself lucky to have a
destination like The Main Cup. If you are ever in the area, the Four State
Food Critic highly recommends you pay them a visit.
