Ahhhhh, fall. The
Four State Food Critic loves this time of year.
Not only does the FSFC encourage eating seasonally, but the same can be
said for your wine, beer, and spirit habits as well. Nothing says autumn like a wonderful hard apple
cider to enjoy on a cool evening, sitting next to a toasty fireplace.
Back in the FSFC’s college years, one had to work at getting
a good batch of hard cider. It used to
involve obtaining fresh, unpasteurized cider in a gallon jug (from a local who pressed it himself) and then waiting
for it to ferment, carefully checking the container each day to relieve the
pressure so it wouldn’t rupture the jug and cause a huge mess.
These days, marketers have discovered there is a growing
market for hard cider, and several brands have cropped up that can easily be
found at your favorite beer, wine, or liquor store. One of the Four State Food Critic’s favorites
is Woodpecker Premium Apple Cider.

By itself, the taste is crisp, fruity, and semi-dry. The Four State Food Critic also loves to mix it
with beer (Yuengling, the FSFC’s brand of choice, works well here) in a 50-50
ratio, creating what is known as a “Snakebite”.
This creates a unique and wonderful flavor combination, perfect for this
time of year.
The general market has been flooded by all sorts of new
apple cider brands, so Woodpecker Premium Cider is getting harder to find. Look for it in a green bottle. It is also sometimes available in cans and if
you’re at a really trendy bar or pub, can be found on draft (a rare find
indeed). Ask for it at any local liquor store that
offers a good selection of craft beers.
