Wine Wednesday: Simi Chardonnay

The Four State Food Critic is not much of a white wine drinker (I prefer big and bold reds), but there are a few whites that I find to be consistently satisfying.  With another holiday upon us, people are always asking “what sort of wine goes with Thanksgiving turkey?”  A safe bet is always a Chardonnay, as whites generally pair well with any poultry.

Simi is a Sonoma County, California vineyard that has been around since 1876 and currently offers sixteen (16) varieties of wine.  They also offer three varieties of Chardonnay, one from the Alexander Valley, one from the Russian River Valley, and their lowest cost brand, the Sonoma County (pictured below):

This is a dry white - medium bodied - with flavors of green apple, pear, lemon, and cream.  In addition to your Thanksgiving bird, it also pairs nicely with baked chicken or seared scallops.

The price averages around $14 a bottle across all Sonoma County vintages (please note - the Alexander Valley and Russian River Valley versions are significantly higher in price), so it’s a nice wine at a reasonable cost.   Ask for it at any local liquor store that offers a moderate to extensive wine selection.
